Understanding DIM
02/25/2025

DIM (Diindolylmethane) is a compound that comes from breaking down indole-3-carbinol, which is found naturally in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. What makes DIM especially interesting is how it helps guide estrogen metabolism in your body. Think of it like a traffic cop directing cars - DIM helps direct estrogen down the healthier metabolic pathways in your body.

When your body processes estrogen, it can break it down in different ways. One pathway (2-OH Estrone) is beneficial, while others (16-OH and 4-OH Estrone) are less desirable. DIM helps encourage more estrogen to take that beneficial pathway, supporting healthier hormone balance.

This study looked at how taking DIM (a supplement) affects estrogen levels in urine. In a large group of women, almost all estrogen types were different between those who used DIM and those who didn’t, except for one type. In a smaller group, where estrogen levels were measured before and after starting DIM, only four types showed changes. In both groups, total estrogen levels and certain estrogen ratios changed significantly. These findings confirm that DIM affects estrogen metabolism and suggest that the urine test used in this study is a useful way to measure those changes. More research is needed to understand DIM’s full effects.

This is why some people take DIM supplements alongside hormone therapy - it helps ensure that any estrogens in your body are metabolized in the most beneficial way possible. It's particularly relevant for women concerned about breast health or those using any form of estrogen supplementation. DIM and estriol work well together. DIM helps direct estrogen metabolism along healthy pathways while estriol provides localized support. Continuing your DIM while using estriol can be beneficial, as DIM helps ensure any estrogens are metabolized optimally.
