Perimenopause Pains
03/17/2025

With studies showing that many women start experiencing perimenopause symptoms as early as their thirties, we took a look at some of the research into perimenopause, and why it can be so debilitating for so many women...

Perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause, brings significant hormonal and reproductive changes that impact both physical and emotional health. Around 90% of women seek medical advice for menopausal symptoms, with hot flashes being the most well-known. While most women experience them for 1-2 years, about one-third have moderate to severe hot flashes, and some may deal with them for a decade or longer.

Sleep disturbances become more common, influenced both by hormonal shifts and aging. Mood disorders, including anxiety and depression, rise sharply in the later stages of perimenopause, particularly as menstrual cycles become more irregular. These symptoms often interact—women with depression frequently report worse hot flashes and disrupted sleep.

Vaginal changes, including dryness and painful intercourse (dyspareunia), affect roughly one-third of women. Unlike hot flashes or mood changes, vaginal symptoms typically persist unless treated. Management strategies include hormone therapy, non-hormonal treatments, and behavioral approaches, which can offer relief for many perimenopausal women.
