Mind Over Menopause
01/07/2025

This survey of 139 UK menopause specialists (71% in primary care, 29% in secondary care) revealed significant gaps in mental health support for menopausal women.

While 65% of clinicians offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for mood symptoms, 99% acknowledged that its provision is inadequate. A large portion (43%) felt over half their patients with mood issues would benefit from psychological support, yet 80% lack access to a dedicated mental health practitioner.

This lack of support is further highlighted by the fact that only 35% of specialists refer complex cases to secondary mental health services. When asked about desired resources, the overwhelming majority (83%) called for better access to CBT, followed by psychological support within menopause clinics (65%), guidance on managing mood symptoms (53%), and multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics (39%). These findings emphasize the need for non-hormonal interventions alongside HRT for complex mood disorders in menopausal women, leading to a local service funding bid for CBT and a pilot gynecology/psychiatry MDT hub.
