Menopause and the Skin: Cosmeceuticals for Estrogen-Deficient Skin
01/07/2025

After menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly, leading to various skin changes like thinning, wrinkles, dryness, and slower healing. What does this mean? Well, as estrogen declines, so does collagen, and with it the stretchy nature of our skin, as well as the 'mesh' that keeps skin looking and feeling soft and supple.

The answer? Helping estrogen receptors...

This study found (as well as looking at a wealth of past and ongoing research) that topical estriol is one of the most effective treatments for skin aging - when accounting for race and factors such as smoking and sun exposure. They noted that, in the past, estrogen has been demonized due to the systemic effects of estradiol or equilin (horse urine) based estrogens. However, current estrogen treatments, using low dose estriol, have been found to be safe, effective and very helpful in treating aging skin in women in menopause!
